E161 | The Bronze Medal Mentality: Finding Joy and Growth in the BJJ Grind
About This Episode
In this episode of Tapped In, David Figaro Martinez explores the psychological difference between the silver and bronze medal mentalities. While we all strive for gold, the silver medalist is often trapped in a cycle of "what if" and comparative failure. David breaks down why adopting the "happy to be here" bronze mentality allows for more technical experimentation, a healthier relationship with loss, and ultimately, faster long-term growth for the hobbyist and veteran student alike.
3 Key Takeaways
- Release the Comparative Trap: Silver medalists often focus on what they didn't do, while bronze medalists celebrate that they made it to the podium at all.
- Experimentation Through Failure: A healthy relationship with losing allows you to be a "little scientist" on the mats, testing new techniques without the fear of ego-bruising blunders.
- Jiu-Jitsu is a Game: For the vast majority of us over 30, BJJ is a hobby we pay to do; treat it like a fun pickup game of basketball rather than a life-or-death struggle.

00:00 Welcome to Tapped In, my name is David Figaro Martinez... today we're going to be discussing the bronze medal mentality for growth.
01:30 I wanted to prove that my abilities warranted a promotion... and when that didn't happen... I very much became a little more competitive.
03:45 The silver medalist... their mindset is always wrapped around what could have happened... the bronze medalist often feels like "at least I medaled."
05:20 Because you came up just short [in silver], you're thinking about things in a comparison model.
07:15 At this level, I'm not beating myself up... when I go out there and make a blunder, often times I smile or laugh to myself.
09:30 Today I was going against one of my brown belts... I had this armbar... he somehow bridged and I lost position... and internally I just kind of giggled.
11:45 We're supposed to make mistakes... be little scientists and conduct these tests that more often than not are going to fail.
14:00 This entire thing... is just a fucking game. It's not life and death.
16:15 The best students I have... are really silly about themselves. They don't take themselves seriously.
18:30 Jiu-Jitsu costs us way too much money to be pissed off about our results.
20:00 As a black belt, you're going to mess up a lot... I have failed that saying more times than you realize.
21:30 Take that bronze medal mentality and just be happy to be there.
