Episode 163
E163 | The Art of Mentorship In Bjj
About This Episode
In this episode, David Figueroa Martinez discusses the transformative power of mentorship in Jiu-Jitsu. By "adopting" a lower belt, practitioners can offer technical tidbits and emotional support that help students navigate the "comparison trap" and stay committed to the art, even on their hardest days.
3 Key Takeaways
- Small Adjustments, Big Gains: Subtle technical advice—like using body mass instead of strength—can lead to massive improvements in a student's game within a single week.
- The Human Connection: Mentorship is about more than just BJJ; it’s about checking in on a student's emotional well-being and life outside the mats.
- Don't Quit on Your Worst Day: This simple mantra serves as a powerful tool to help students push through the inevitable plateaus and frustrations of training.

00:00 Welcome to Tapped In. My name is David Figueroa Martinez... and today we're going to be discussing adopting a belt, the art of mentorship.
01:00 The white and blue belts... are in more of a fight or flight sometimes... they don't always know why things are happening.
02:30 One week later, literally... I'm in the bottom of side and I'm feeling this newfound pressure... I was genuinely uncomfortable.
04:15 You just give somebody a little bit of a tidbit and you explain the why... and then it starts becoming part of their game.
06:00 It requires an investment... it requires paying attention to everything about them: their technique, do they seem off?
08:00 Your job as a mentor is to shut that [comparison] shit down... we have the hardest time during Jiu-Jitsu when we're comparing ourselves to everyone else.
10:00 Everything is a ripple effect... you might say something to a student... and then years later they'll tell you, "Oh yeah, you remember when you said such and such?"
12:15 Don't quit on your worst day... it's one of my favorite sayings because it's not overly complicated... but it helped me through quite a few instances.
14:30 Every layer requires mentorship downward, and every layer under you really needs some mentorship... it's a necessity for gyms.
15:45 If you haven't done this, I highly recommend you do it... any questions let me know. Until next time, thank you so much.
